African Cricket Tour Cancellation Could Affect London 2012

The Telegraph reports that well-informed sources in the Olympic movement were taking a very dim view of the prospect of England’s decision not to go ahead with their cricket tour of Zimbabwe next winter.

One International Olympic Committee (IOC) member told the Telegraph “this does not sound like a good decision for London. London 2012 will have their work cut out to explain to Africa why they are not going to Zimbabwe”. London is one of nine cities bidding to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

According to the Telegraph, Paris, one of London’s main rivals, is seeking African support and is certain to exploit any cricket boycott.

Meanwhile, Sporting Life reports that there are fears London’s bid will be adversely affected if the athletics and swimming facilities at Crystal Palace are not renovated soon.

At least 1.5 million pounds are needed within the next couple of months so that the stadium can be used for the athletics Grand Prix meeting on July 30.
