Speaking at a European forum, Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon said hosting the 2012 Summer Olympic Games would transform the city of Madrid.
He told the forum, “we promised that Madrid was going to be Olympic and we are going to comply with it. Madrid is capable of organizing Olympic Games and the fact that we are fighting with the most important cities of the world has placed Madrid in the dimension in which it has to be”.
He added that what Madrid can do from now to 2012 is not only define a new architectural and urban development landscape, but provide Madrid with a greater presence in the world.
The Mayor talked about the concentration, integration and proximity of Madrid’s facilities and said that 70 per cent have already been constructed or are in development.
He listed seven affects hosting the 2012 Games would have on the city including improving its public transportation and increase tourism.
Ruiz-Gallardon said the effort put into hosting the 2012 Games would provide the city with many benefits during a reasonable period of time (seven years) and it will make Madrid a better city.
