A Cool Vancouver 2010 Games

Suddenly anything Canadian is cool. Blame it on the Salt Lake Winter Games.

Labatt’s beer is cool. It’s Canadian. Roots sportswear is cool. Made in Canada. Canada’s figure skating pair gold medallists Sale and Pelletier are cool. They’ve just signed a lucrative contract with Procter and Gamble. Every time we brush our teeth with Crest we’ll think about the cool Canadians.

Canada’s tourism industry is hoping that the country’s new cool image will attract more tourists who might want a reason to come to Canada.

If anything Canadian is cool, why not a cool Canadian Olympics? Vancouver is bidding for the 2010 Winter Games and Ted Nebbeling, the British Columbia minister of state responsible for the bid predicts that Canada’s medal count at the Salt Lake Games should put some fire in Vancouver’s 2010 bid. He says people needed to see how exciting an Olympics can be.

Nebbeling says having both the men’s and women’s hockey teams win gold in Canada’s national sport will be a tremendous boost for the Vancouver bid.

And following NBC’s relatively high ratings during the Games, a North American bid could be more attractive for the network that wins the contract to broadcast the 2010 Games.

A cool Canadian 2010 Olympics? Only time will tell.
