It’s nail-biting time for the four cities vying to become the U.S. candidate for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. On Tuesday, members of the U.S. selection team will announce the final two candidate cities, and the panel’s recommendations will go to more than 100 members of the USOC board of directors who will select the U.S. candidate on November 3.
Last Tuesday was the deadline for the four bid cities to submit additional information to the USOC panel.
Houston’s final presentation included a letter from Lamine Diack of Senegal, president of the International Association of Athletic Federations, endorsing the plan to turn the Reliant Astrodome into the world’s first enclosed, full-scale track and field stadium.
Also, there was information submitted on the foundations 140-member international ambassadors committee and Houston city council’s pledge of $5 million for marketing support if Houston advances in the 2012 race.
San Francisco submitted an updated report from the regional transportation commission and on its Olympic outreach program.
New York updated the panel on recent triathlon and cycling events held in the city.
Washington provided information on other proposed athletic events planned for the area.
Now it’s all up to the USOC.
