Masters Is Opportunity To Promote Golf’s Inclusion At 2016 Games

Golf is making a push to be included in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games at this week’s Masters. The sport is in competition with six other sports.

Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal and Ancient Club and joint secretary of the International Golf Federation, the body charged with putting the bid together, said, “we’ve had no feedback from the IOC so far and nor would be expect any. But we’ve had a very good series of meetings and all the players are very excited about it”.

The plan, according to Sporting life, is to put forward men and women’s 72-hole stroke play events, each involving fields of 60.

Sporting life reports Sports Illustrated published a highly critical article last week about how the 120 will be selected. The article said, “if golf is successful it’s going to be one suspect outing. I use the term ‘outing’ because it seems more appropriate than tournament.

“A handful of players will come from the top of the rankings, a few from the middle and, in the name of international diplomacy, a bunch from the bottom”.

According to Sporting life, based on current rankings, Trevor Immelman and Zach Johnson, the last two Masters champions, would miss out if Olympic golf was being played this week.
