Officials from the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA) and the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARSIF), met last week to discuss a bid to include ice climbing and mountaineering at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
The UIAA explained how it’s in the process of promoting its sports and is ready to launch a campaign for inclusion on the 2022 Winter Games program next year.
In 2014 the international governing body will travel to Sochi to host a demo-run at the Olympic Park. Visitors will have an opportunity to take part in each of the sports in the running.
At a future meeting the governing bodies will know which particular sport is the most popular, which has the best relationship with the crowd, and which is logistically viable.
The sport involves climbing certain ice structures including waterfalls, icefalls, ice slabs or rocks, which are all covered in ice or artificial structures.
