The II Marathon of the Russian Regions, a project which is part of the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad, featured more than 1,200 artists from 40 regions of the country, performing in Sochi and London during the 2012 Summer Games.
More than 1,000 people, residents and visitors to London and Sochi, immersed themselves in Russia’s musical culture, from ancient Adygean songs and “fiery” Cossack dancing, to the “dynamic” Lezginka and some “bewitching” guttural singing.
From July 21 to August 12 the event was held in Sochi on the square at the South Pier of Sochi Marine Trade Port. London hosted the festival July 26 to August 12 at Russia.Sochi.Park, Hyde Park and Victoria Park. In London 16 ensembles, more than 250 performers from 13 Russian regions, performed to audiences, showcasing Russian Culture.
During the Games, Londoners and visitors to the city were able to enjoy authentic music from southern and central Russia, Siberia, the North Caucasus and the Far East.
In Sochi more than 100,000 visitors to the II Marathon of the Russian Regions saw a colourful display for flamboyant dancing, “stunning’ vocal hits and unique national costumes.
More than a thousand artists performed in Sochi in a 24-day period, representing 100 ensembles from 40 Russian regions. Locals and visitors to Sochi saw 600 performances and more than 1,500 national costumes from across Russia.
