Russian Officials Say Sochi 2014 On Track Despite Flooding

The Moscow News reports serious flooding has seen the Mzymta River come close to bursting its banks, taking its toll on the city of Sochi, site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, just as the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coordination Commission, headed by Jean-Claude Killy, is in the city conducting its final inspection ahead of the Winter Games that begin February 7.

Several roads have been closed, and the airport and rail hub have been affected.

Buckets were reportedly placed around the newly-built Sochi airport terminal to catch water that was getting through the cracks and making sloped walkways treacherous to negotiate with luggage.

However Russian officials have insisted everything remains on track for the Olympics themselves.

The inspection ends Thursday when the IOC Commission is expected to report on its visit.
