The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission ended its three-day inspection Wednesday of Rio 2016 and said that it was becoming apparent that the timelines for delivery are already very tight and the amount of work to be completed is considerable.
But the IOC said that since the commission’s last visit in June 2011, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee has made great strides towards creating a clearer vision of the roles and responsibilities of the various stakeholders involved in the Games, as well as clearing defining project deadlines. It cited some examples, including the finalization of the Olympic Park master plan, the clarification of responsibilities for the Deodoro cluster, and the near completion of the Rio 2016 matrix of responsibilities.
The commission visited the Olympic Village construction site where the foundation stone was launched in December 2010. The village will be located within 25 minutes of the competition and training venues for 73 per cent of athletes in the Olympic Games, and 10 minutes from 68 per cent of the athletes in the Paralympic Games.
The commission took the inaugural ride in the Transoeste BRT line (Bus Rapid Transit, high-speed articulated buses) which was part of Rio’s candidature project, which came on stream Wednesday, and then visited the construction site of the Metro Line 4 in Sao Conrado.
The Coordination Commission welcomed the news that the construction of the media village accommodation in Barra has been confirmed and then said that while there was strong interest in new hotel projects in Rio, a large number would still need to be constructed in order to fill the gap noted at the time of the bid.
Rio 2016 organizers and their local partners updated the commission on the progress being made in numerous areas of Games preparations, including athlete and National Olympic Committee services, sport and International Federation services, the Paralympic Games, marketing, sustainability, legacy and venues.
