Vancouver’s BidIndex Soars On Financial News

Today’s BidIndex update from GamesBids.com reflects a flurry of news from the 2010 bid cities over the past month. All eight applicants filed their IOC questionnaire responses and three cities have released them to the public. But news of government funding had the biggest impact.

Vancouver’s bid was promised financial support of $620 million from two governments, news that overshadowed its continuing transportation issues and propelled its BidIndex up 3.11 to 60.23, just ahead of Salzburg and behind frontrunner Berne. Berne was up 1.33 to 60.83 on news of some additional bid funding and their release of a solid mini bid-book. Salzburg, another popular 2010 choice was up 2.62 to 60.06 keeping the competition tight in the early stages of this campaign.

Jaca also released its mini bid-book and enjoyed a BidIndex improvement of 1.72 to 50.51. Harbin (BI 40.10) and Pyeongchang (BI 43.37) round off the list of gainers for this update.

Andorra la Vella (BI 42.64) and Sarajevo (BI 26.70) were the only two decliners due mainly to infrastructure issues. Andorra also released its mini bid-book revealing venues and the primary airport located outside its international borders.

BidIndex is a model that when applied to an Olympic Bid, produces a number that can be used to rate a bid relative to others – and possibly gauge it’s ultimate success.
